Tips on Moving With Kids

Moving is hard for anyone. But moving with kids brings a whole different dynamic! Here’s a few tried-and-true tips you can do to help your kids feel settled & adjust quickly.

• Set up the kid’s rooms that first day: this helps them feel settled and safe by being in a familiar setting their very first night. Plan on moving into the house in the morning so that you’ll have plenty of time. Let the kids help and be a part of the process.

• Involve them in their community: find a church home, get involved in group activities, join an art class, or hit up the neighborhood pool; whatever their interests are, find a group that does it and hop in! Take the time to find a local business like Paint & Bubbles Studio.

• Redecorate their room: it’ll give them have something exciting to look forward to & being a new thing that they have a sense of control over. This can be as simple as a new bedspread & painting the walls blue, to a total makeover. Use an app like ColorSnap® to experiment with colors and find the one they like best.

• Do unique-to-the-area activities: hit up the Houston Zoo, rent a swan boat at the Waterway, or take a trolly tour. Finding fun activities can help them focus on what’s exciting about their new home rather than lament about what they’ll miss from their old home. Look into a fun family day at someplace like Texas TreeVentures or even let the kids invite one of their new friends to join them.

• Get your house set up in a few days: Hear me out! I know some of y’all think I’m nuts. HOWEVER, having your home set up will help your kid(s) feel more secure and comfortable in their new home. Moving is exhausting, but this is when you’ll be especially glad that you decluttered before listing your home and labeled boxes with which room they belong in.
