The Houston Rodeo

Ever heard of this small little rodeo? It’s kiiiiind of a big deal here!

There’s SO many cool things to see, learn, and do at the rodeo, that it can be easy to miss a few things if it’s your first time to go. With that in mind, allow me to be your tour guide for Rodeo Season, and share some can’t miss social media accounts to help you stay in the know! Because if there’s anything you’ll learn about Rodeo season, it’s basically sacred & the announcement of the concert lineup is the level of a national holiday to Houstonians & surrounding areas.

So slip on those cowboy boots and get ready to RODEO!

  1. The Rodeo- Be sure to catch at least a few of the events. The athleticism of the animals & toughness of the cowboys/girls is truly astounding, and if you happen upon the mutton busting & calf scramble, you’re guaranteed some great laughs! (NRG Stadium)

  2. The Running of the Horses- This is truly the most magical portion of the rodeo. With the lights off, a family of horses are introduced to the crowds as some of the athletes of the rodeo and their contribution to the sport. From proud grandmas to shy foals, you’ll be amazed at their beauty & power. (NRG Stadium)

  3. Concerts- The rodeo goes to great efforts to get fantastic artists each year from various music genres! They even bring in some smaller artists growing in popularity…which is awesome. (NRG Stadium)

  4. The Fair- This family friendly event is often visited by folks, even if they aren’t going to the actual rodeo. Fun rides, huge stuffed animals, and all the classic fair foods. (On the grounds)

  5. Livestock Show- Did you know the rodeo provides thousands of dollars in scholarships each year? No only that, but they highlight FFA students and their animals from all over this great state. Grab your people and check out the good things these kids are up to! (NRG Center)

  6. Art Show- Never in my life have I seen such unbelievable artwork. That’s not an exaggeration…and this is student artwork….aka- KIDS! Stroll through the artwork & quilts and be ready to see some insane talent that’ll leave you sighing saying “I wish I had this kind of talent!” (NRG Center)

  7. Exhibits & Petting Zoo- This typically is associated with kids, but believe me, adults will want to experience this area too! Tons of great learning experiences, watch baby chicks hatch, and more! (NRG Center)

  8. Shopping- You have not been shopping until you’ve shopped at the rodeo (or atleast window shop.) It’s a bit overwhelming for a first timer, but go early so you can take your time. There’s lots of unique stuff to see, beautiful craftsmanship, and tasty goodies. (NRG Center)

  9. Food Stalls- Besides just fair food, there’s TONS of food stalls from local, statewide, & national restaurants. My personal favorite is the cobbler stall located just inside the NRG center. But, there’s lots of great places so be sure to come hungry & include it in your budget, because it can be a bit pricey. (various areas throughout)

  10. Bars & Dance Hall- If you enjoy a cool drink and some dancing, the rodeo has some really fun places to go hang out and have a good time! The Hideout is the rodeo’s own dancehall, known for local Texas musicians, great dancing, & good drinks. (various areas throughout)

  11. Cook Off- Want to try some world famous BBQ? Oh friend, we got you covered! This event is a huge favorite at the rodeo, attracting visitors from all over the world to sample some really good BBQ, over the course of 3 days. (NRG Park)
